Mothers of Gynecology, a statue honoring enslaved Black women who were unwilling subjects in experiments that resulted in medical advances, was created by Michelle Browder in Montgomery, Ala.

Birth professionals from around the country gathered in Montgomery, Ala., to heal, to learn and to honor the lives and sacrifices of three women: Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsey, the Mothers of Gynecology.

These towering mothers built of scrap metal were the cornerstone of a two-day conference in late February centered on Black maternal health inside Old Ship A.M.E Zion Church.

"There's so much that people don't know about," says Dr. Veronica Maria Pimentel, an obstetrician gynecologist based in Hartford, Ct., who began a petition two years ago asking those in her field to recognize the contributions of Anarcha, Lucy and Betsey.

"The history is told from the point of view of those in power and those who were in power were men and those who were in power were also white," she says. "And we're talking about women, we're talking specifically about Black women, and we're talking about enslaved Black women. So it is important for us to go back and look at this history because the history informs what we're doing today when we talk about inequalities in health care."

Local artist Michelle Browder has thought about the Mothers of Gynecology since she was 18. That's when she learned of a white doctor named J. Marion Sims, who experimented on the bodies of enslaved Black women without offering any pain relief. He claimed to have cured them of ailments that arose from pregnancy.

Browder built the massive sculptures from donated metal on land her family owns, a response to the statue of Sims that sits a few miles away. She dedicated this public monument to every mother who ever lost a child. Welded to the metal bodies are names like Serena Williams and words like beauty and resilience. African beads adorn their necks. Browder took the tool Sims invented — the speculum — and created a tiara for Betsey.

Intimacy is a massage after a long day. Not to turn on the mood light but offload the burden.

Intimacy is laughing over a home cooked meal in unison with the village who raised you.
_
Intimacy is gently dragging your fingers across your lovers skin painting a picture only love sees.
_
Intimacy is rocking your child to sleep across your bare chest.
_
Intimacy is the small gestures that mean big things. It’s the quiet moments your mind forgets that your heart remembers.
_
We experience various levels of intimacy we the people we interact with. For some reason, we as people have tried so totally to eradicate it from all aspects of our lives that sometimes that compartmentalization blocks us from doing sharing in it when we desire to.
_
We have to reimagine how we categorize our relationships and our connectedness to our communities. We limit ourselves we when only think in terms of scarcity instead of abundance.
_
There is enough love to go around. All parts of us are enough. You don’t have to be in love to share love.
_

Everyone is deserving of pleasure.

No matter what societal narratives we’ve been force fed WE DESERVE PLEASURE.

The further removed from white, cishetero male, able, and affluent we are the less society seems to believe we are deserving of pleasure.
_
We are taught we aren’t feminine or masculine enough, we don’t fit tidily enough into the gender binary.
_
We are taught we shouldn’t be worried about sex until we step our money up. That were too poor to be concerned with pleasure.
_
That we don’t have the right body types. We’re not the right complexion. Our bodies aren’t normal. We’re too much. We’re not enough. We’re too young. We’re too old. We’re not in the right relationship dynamic.
_
Slowly, over time, we begin to internalize these things. We begin to lose ourselves in others whatsboutism. We never learn to connect with our pleasure for fear of falling out of line.
_
We have to let these societal stigmas go. We have to embrace the parts of us that make us who we are. To hell what anybody else has to say.
_
Not that shit sounds easy as hell right? The reality is a lot more fugazi.
_
The reality is that when we decide to embrace the things that society counts as other society doesn’t necessarily embrace it with us.
_
There are real consequences beating to your own drum. Unfortunately, we live in a world that prioritizes rigid conformity. That ain’t afraid to try to beat ya back in line.
_
People who celebrate these identities are often seen as a threat to the status quo.
_
Women who take ownership of their sexuality. Men who fit strictly into hyper masculine rolls. Those who dare defy the binary. Older people who want to get their groove back. Disabled people showcasing their sexuality. BIPOC not succumbing to racialized sexual scripts. Poor people who engage in sex when others tell them they’ve got bigger worries.
_
But it is so worth it and everyone who pushes back again the system change it in little ways little by little.
_

This morning I would like to honor the ancestor Maude E. Callen for fighting the good fight. She was a nurse-midwife, an educator, an advocate, a sister, a friend, and so so much more.
_
Taking on the challenges of reproductive healthcare in rural South Carolina in the early 1900s was not small feat.
_
She was unwavering in her care for the residents of Pinesville for 62 years.
_
She is quoted as having said, on turning down an invitation from President Reagan to visit the White House, "You can't just call me up and ask me to be somewhere. I've got to do my job."
_
She was one of only 9 nurse-midwifes at the time and used her skills to support and empower mostly-poor, Black South Carolinians.
_
Conditions in Berkeley County were difficult:
• "[A]t the edge of Hell Hole Swamp in Pineville houses were still lit by oil lamps, not electricity. Not having power lines meant no telephones, and people went to town by wagon or buggy."
• "Nurse Maude recalled that there were only two cars in Berkeley County and none of the roads were paved. Many of her patients arrived at her home in oxcarts in the middle of the night."
• "[Callen] frequently had to park her car and walk through mud, woods, and creeks to reach her patients."

Even after retirement she volunteered her time and services to her community until her dying day.
_
It is important for me to celebrate and venerate the legacies of those who came before me. Those who beat the odds and pulled others up with them.

Y’all should know by now that my account primarily focuses on the life and legacy of Black folks in the sexuality and reproductive space. It is important because we don’t want amazing people like Maude E. Callen’s work to go unrecognized. She is just as valuable to the conversation and history as her white counterparts.

Yesterday, March 22nd, was the 50th anniversary of the historic SC decision to grant single women and AFABs access to birth control.
_
In 1960, the FDA approved the pill as a contraceptive — but in some states, like Connecticut, it wasn’t actually legal for doctors to prescribe it.
_
At the time, Estelle Griswold was Planned Parenthood of Connecticut’s executive director and an activist for birth control access. She purposefully opened a health center that provided birth control, and summarily got arrested.
_
Her case, Griswold v. Connecticut, went all the way up to the Supreme Court, which ruled in 1965 that birth control is legal for married women. The case set a precedent for other states and influenced numerous decisions since, including the ruling in Roe v. Wade, which protects women’s private medical decisions — including abortion.
_
According to data from 2018, 65 percent of women & AFABs in the United States ages 15 to 49 were using a form of contraception.
_
However, despite these numbers, more than 19 million people of varying reproductive ages in the U.S. live in "contraceptive deserts," meaning the county they live in lacks access to at least one health center that offers a full range of publicly-funded contraception to those eligible, such as diaphragms, oral contraception, intrauterine devices, and more.
_
"Fifty years after Eisenstadt v. Baird recognized a legal right to access birth control, far too many lack the ability to exercise that right in any meaningful way," the nonprofit Power to Decide said in a press release.
_
Birth control has been a gamer changer for reproductive, racial, and economic justice. The ability to control one’s own body and reproduction is quintessential to autonomy and freedom of personhood.
_
Birth control, like other family planning resources, had been under attack. We need to ensure that the gains made 50 years ago keep moving forward and not back.
_

Whether you are in or outside of this community we ALL need to know about the injustices faced and do our part to right these many wrongs.

Below are common warning signs; however if a person is showing these “signs” that doesn’t mean they definitely have been assaulted.
_
Physical Signs:
• Unexplained STIs
• Increased difficulty walking or sitting for a long time
• Bruising of the genitals or inner thighs
• Bleeding, irritation or pain of anus or genitals
• Pain when urinating or moving the bowels
• Bloody, stain or tattered undergarments
_
Behavioral Signs:
• Agitation, anxiety, inability to focus or abrupt change your mood
• Withdrawing from family, friends, or social situations
• Anxiety or fears about bathing or using the restroom
• Changes in eating habits or refusing to eat
• Displaying symptoms of PTSD
• Suicide attempts
• Nightmares or other sleep problems
• Experiencing trouble swallowing or an unusual fear of objects near the mouth
• New fear of specific places or people
• Refusal to discuss events with others
• Expresses sexual actions or images through varying media, such as drawings
• Negative view of body, especially the general area
• Having an unusual relationship with the caregiver that seems to have sexual elements involved

We have to understand how racism, ableism, homophobia, and sexism can negatively impacts lives.
_
Everyone is deserving of adequate sex education. It is both a protective tool and a pathway to pleasure.
_
We must all do our part in putting an end to this epidemic. Not just because we, or someone we love is disabled or could be one day, but because disabled people are human beings deserving of care and protection.

Even though tubal ligation is a safe and effective form of birth control, about 1 out of 200 women may still become pregnant after the procedure.
_
Having the surgery just after your period starts may avoid the chance that an already fertilized egg will reach your uterus after surgery.
_
Some potential risks include:
•Bleeding from an incision or inside the abdomen
•Infection
•Damage to other organs inside the abdomen
•Side effects from anesthesia
•Ectopic pregnancy (an egg that becomes fertilized outside the uterus)
Incomplete closing of a fallopian tube that results in pregnancy
_
It’s also important to note that while tubal ligation is an option it can be difficult for some people to receive.
_
People are have been denied tubal ligations because they're too young, childless, only have one child, aren't married, encourage husbands approval—or for any other reason their doctor chooses.
_
Then there are insurance barriers: For those who have Medicaid, there’s a required 30-day waiting period between signing the consent form and having the procedure, whereas people with more expensive private insurance (and a willing doctor) can schedule it right away.
_
Ariel Tazkargy, a health law attorney in Kansas City, Missouri, says these obstacles boil down to systemic patriarchal ideals and norms, and sexism at its base level. “People have so many opinions about women choosing to reproduce or not, and I think physicians in the position to make that decision are hesitant because they think a woman might regret it later,” she says. “And that comes down to: We don’t trust women. We don’t trust women to make choices for themselves.”
_

If you speak easy pronouns that reinforce the gender binary are probably most common to you; however those aren’t the only pronouns that exist. Nor are they always used the we we assume they are.
_
Now I know y’all know what they say about assuming (it makes an ass out of you and me)!
_
Not all languages are gendered. English and English speakers have to normalize asking for someone’s pronouns and using the ones people tell you.
_
It’s wild that people have no issue calling someone by a preferred nickname but come loose at the seams when asked to switch from he to she or they or xer.
_
Also remember a persons pronouns can change over time. They’re valid no matter how many usages that have.
_
This is just a beginner. There are way more pronouns in use and we should be as accommodating as possible to make gender inclusive spaces.

Let’s go back, back in time. In the graphics I mention how racial bias began with the introduction of whiteness on the African continent. Let’s fast forward to chattel slavery for a bit.
_
During chattel slavery Black people were used a the driving labor force in the US. Black people lacked autonomy in every sense of the word. Forced to work, endure abuses, and breed all for the profit of white supremacy.
_
After the abolition of slavery in 1865, White Americans had an increasing fear of race mixing. Black men were stereotyped as having a particular list for White women which White society was not fucking with.
_
*Enter Anti-Miscegenation laws* These were passed by most states and prohibited interracial marriage (in some cases even sexual activity).
_
If was only after the Supreme Court case Loving v. Virginia in 1967 were such laws federally proven unconstitutional.
_
Fetishization of Black Women

This bias expanded during the Colonial Era. White, male, slave owners justified their sexual abuse of Black women by claiming they were hyper-sexual property. Not human and too sexual to ever not consent.
_
Sarah Baartman’s body was utilized as a means to juxtapose Black women’s bodies and White women’s bodies as a factor of biological hypersexuality.
_
Black Men are seen as hyper-sexual and hyper-masculine. The Mandingo stereotype dates back to slavery. Black men were said to be animalistic in their sexual desires and in need of being tamed.
_
These stereotypes have real life consequences. Black people’s believed sexual aggression has led to being falsely accused in sex-based crimes, invalidated as victims of sex-based crimes, have their bodies over-sexualized and seen as inappropriate in professional settings, among many other things.
_
While most people claim their preferences as nothing more than just that the reality is often they have to do more with the bias we grew up with.
_
We should all reflect of our choices instead of relying solely on “that’s just what I like”. Why do you believe one thing is true about an entire group of people? And how has that shaped your world view at large?

There was a a 14% decline in the abortion rate in Tennessee between 2014 and 2017, from 10.7 to 9.2 abortions per 1,000 women of reproductive age. Abortions in Tennessee represent 1.4% of all abortions in the United States.

There were 12 facilities providing abortion in Tennessee in 2017, and 8 of those were clinics. These numbers represent a 14% increase in clinics from 2014, when there were 11 abortion-providing facilities overall, of which seven were clinics.

In 2017, some 96% of Tennessee counties had no clinics that provided abortions, and 63% of Tennessee women lived in those counties.

In Tennessee, the following restrictions on abortion were in effect as of January 1, 2022:

•Abortion would be banned if Roe v. Wade were overturned.
•A patient must receive state-directed counseling that includes information designed to discourage the patient from having an abortion, and then wait 48 hours before the procedure is provided. Counseling must be provided in person and must take place at any medical facility before the waiting period begins, thereby necessitating two trips to the facility.
•Health plans offered in the state’s health exchange under the Affordable Care Act may not provide coverage of abortion.
•The use of telemedicine to administer medication abortion is prohibited.
•The parent of a minor must consent before an abortion is provided.
•Public funding is available for abortion only in cases of life endangerment, rape or incest.
•A patient must undergo an ultrasound before obtaining an abortion; the provider must show and describe the image to the patient.
•An abortion may be performed at or after viability only in cases of life endangerment or severely compromised health.
•The state prohibits abortions performed for the purpose of race or sex selection, or in response to genetic anomaly.
